Departing Groton, CT in Feb, 1942, the Gato saw significant action throughout WWII in the Pacific, encountering and attacking numerous Japanese ships from North to South. After the end of the war, the Gato received the Presidential Unit Citation in recognition of daring exploits for service in WWII.
