“Big Mamie” served throughout the entire second World War in both theMediterranean as well as the Pacific. She protected ocean-crossing convoys inthe Pacific as well as covering island invasions such as those at Kwajalein,Leyte Gulf and the invasion of Okinawa by US forces. Near the end of the war BigMamie struck positions on Iwo Jima in preparation for the US invasion. By theend of WWII the USS Massachusetts had received 11 battle stars for exemplaryservice. The battleship was decommissioned in 1947 and now rests in Fall River,MA as a memorial to those who gave their lives serving on her deck.
