Intended to become the main battle tank of the Wehrmacht’s armored units, the Panzerkampfwagen III medium tank was designed in the mid-1930s. It was a key player in the Blitzkrieg and the early phases of the Second World War. Over time, its successive versions received more effective main armament. After the 37mm gun of the first series, it was equipped with guns reaching up to 75mm, allowing it to face superior armored vehicles. The armor was reinforced and often supplemented with additional protection to increase its survivability in combat. However, from 1943 onwards, the technological gap compared to opposing tanks gradually led to the Panzer III being replaced by more modern and heavily armed vehicles.
