The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II and the Korean War, among other conflicts. The Mustang was designed in 1940 by North American Aviation. First flight of the Mustang was on October 26th1940 and introduced into service in January 1942. The official last year of service was 1984 with the Dominican Air Force. Over 15,000 Mustangs were produced.
This model represents the Mustang “Old Crow” (BUNO 414450) flow by Captain C.E. “Bud” Anderson of the 363rdFighter Squadron, 357thFighter Group in 1944. “Bud” was a triple ace in World War II and he also served during the Vietnam War. He was good friends and served with Chuck Yeager during their time with the 357thFigher Group.
The model is made by Air Force One under the brand name of Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. The model has no landing gear and is displayed as if in flight.
