In 1938, the White Motor Company began the study and development of the M3 in order to provide the US Army with an armored reconnaissance vehicle. Equipped with a 110hp 6-cylinder Hercules JXD petrol engine, this machine reached a maximum speed of 81km/h. Equipped with four-wheel drive, it was used for patrol, reconnaissance and command post missions. This vehicle, which could accommodate up to 8 men, was equipped with a Browning M2 12.7mm machine gun and two other Browning 7.7mm on the sides. It was first employed during the Battle of the Philippines in 1941 and also operated in North Africa and Sicily. Subsequently, it was replaced by the M8 Greyhound for distant exploration missions. In addition to the American Army, it was also used by the British and French forces and by certain divisions of the Red Army who used it to tow the ZIS-3 76mm gun.
