About the Aircraft
The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter stands as one of the most recognizable interceptors of the Cold War. Known as“The Missile With a Man in It,”the Starfighter was the first operational aircraft capable of sustained Mach 2 flight, setting multiple speed and altitude records. Operated by more than a dozen nations, the F-104 remained in service across global air arms for decades, cementing its legacy as a technological icon of the jet age.
Mitsubishi-built F-104J airframe 46-8587 (construction number 683B-3087) entered JASDF service in 1964 and later flew with the 202nd Hikotai of the 5th Air Wing. Its vivid blue and red TAC Meet markings made it one of the most recognizable Starfighters ever operated by Japan. Aircraft 587 represented the squadron in both the 1980 and 1981 ACM/TAC Meets—Japan’s equivalent to NATO’s Tiger Meet—before being retired in 1982 during the F-15J transition.
