OVERVIEW
The “Toxic Death” Legacy
Developed in the shadows of the 1970s, the F-117A Nighthawk was the culmination of Lockheed’s secretive “Have Blue” project. Tasked with countering evolving Soviet air defenses, the Skunk Works proved that a stealth aircraft could be produced and deployed. First flying in 1981, the Nighthawk remained a ghost in the Pentagon’s budget until its existence was finally confirmed to the public in 1988.
This Hobby Master model representsYF-117A Bureau Number 79-10781, the second Nighthawk ever produced. Assigned to the410th Flight Test Squadron “Baja Scorpions”asScorpion 2, this airframe served as a critical development platform. In 1991, during its preparation for retirement and museum display, the aircraft’s highly classified and toxic radar-absorbent coating was blasted off with baking soda. The bare aluminum body was then adorned with the legendary“Toxic Death”skull and crossbones—a nickname given by ground crews who believed it was bad luck for an aircraft to fly without a name.
