The “Slow But Deadly” Legend
The Douglas SBD Dauntless stands as the most iconic American naval scout and dive bomber of World War II. Manufactured between 1940 and 1944, the SBD (“Scout Bomber Douglas”) served as the backbone of the U.S. Navy’s carrier-based strike force. While its official name was the Dauntless, its initials earned it the affectionate nickname “Slow But Deadly”—a testament to its rugged survivability and devastating precision. The SBD is best remembered for the Battle of Midway in June 1942, where it delivered the fatal blows to the Japanese carrier fleet, fundamentally shifting the course of the Pacific War.
The Commander Howard Young Replica
This Hobby Master model is a precision replica of the SBD-2 flown by Commander Howard Young, commander of Air Group Six aboard the USS Enterprise (CV-6) in 1942. Young was a central figure in the early days of the war, encountering Japanese forces on December 7, 1941, while returning from Wake Island. Under his leadership, Air Group Six conducted the first American attacks on Japanese-held territory in February 1942. Young’s tactical brilliance during raids on the Marshall, Gilbert, Marcus, and Wake Islands earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and promotion to Carrier Air Group Commander in April 1942.
