The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is a single-seat, twin turbofan engine, straight wing jet aircraft developed by Fairchild-Republic for the United States Air Force (USAF). Commonly referred to by the nicknames “Warthog” or “Hog”, its official name comes from the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, a World War II fighter-bomber effective at attacking ground targets. The A-10 was designed for close air support (CAS) of friendly ground troops, attacking armored vehicles and tanks, and providing quick-action support against enemy ground forces. The Thunderbolt first flew on May 10th1972 and entered service with the United States Air Force in October 0f 1977 and continues in service. A total of 716 were produced during a production run from 1972-1984.
This Daron Postage Stamp replica is of an A-10 Thunderbolt II with the 163rdFighter Squadron. The 163rdFS is a unit of the Indiana Air National Guard 122ndFighter Wing located in Fort Wayne, Indiana. They changed their names from the Marksmen to Blacksnakes in 1997 for a less aggressive undertone. They have been operating A-10’s since 2010.
