HISTORY ASPECTS:
The de Havilland Mosquito NF Mk.II flown by Wing Commander Peter G. Wykeham-Barnes was a key aircraft in the Royal Air Force’s night air defense during World War II. As Commanding Officer of No. 23 Squadron, Wykeham-Barnes became one of the RAF’s most successful night-fighter aces, credited with 14 aerial victories. The de Havilland Mosquito NF Mk II was an early night-fighter variant of the famous wooden “Mosquito,” equipped with radar and heavy forward-firing armament, making it highly effective in intercepting enemy bombers under the cover of darkness.
Operating from Malta, No. 23 Squadron played a crucial role in defending the strategically vital island during the Siege of Malta and subsequent Mediterranean operations. Although the most intense phase of the siege had passed by 1943, Axis air raids and reconnaissance missions continued to threaten Allied positions. Wykeham-Barnes and his crews used the Mosquito’s speed, radar capability, and stealthy construction to intercept German and Italian aircraft at night, often catching them unaware. These missions demanded exceptional coordination between pilot and radar operator, as well as precise flying in darkness.
Beyond defensive operations, Mosquito night fighters from Malta also supported broader Allied efforts in the Mediterranean Theater, including missions linked to the Allied invasion of Sicily. By disrupting enemy air activity and protecting Allied forces and shipping, Wykeham-Barnes and No. 23 Squadron contributed to securing air superiority in the region. The Mosquito’s versatility and advanced design made it one of the most effective multi-role aircraft of the war, and its success in the night-fighter role cemented its legendary status.
This 1:72 scale model is an exceptional addition for World War II aviation collectors. Featuring authentic markings of No. 23 Squadron and detailed representation of the Mosquito’s sleek wooden design, it captures the innovation and combat success of this remarkable aircraft. Perfect for display, this replica honors one of the RAF’s top night-fighter aces, add it to your collection today and celebrate the legacy of the “Wooden Wonder.”
