As railroads underwent major changes in the second half of the 20th century, a movement was started by enthusiasts to preserve fast disappearing steam locomotives, antiquated rolling stock, and historically significant routes from possible abandonment. From these humble beginnings, the open car has today become an essential component of most tourist railroads – even when paired with traditional passenger cars – offering a thrilling open-air experience for riders as they travel through breathtaking scenery.
