The Boeing B-17 “Flying Fortress” four-engine heavy bomber was widely used by the United States Army Air Force during World War II. Produced in large numbers, it was primarily used by the 8th Air Force for daylight strategic bombing missions over the European front, supported by a long-range fighter escort. Compared to previous versions, the B-17F was distinguished by increased range, a larger bomb-carrying capacity, and enhanced defensive armament, consisting of ten .50-caliber machine guns.
