The AV-8B Harrier II multirole attack and close air support aircraft was born from a collaboration between the British and American aerospace industries. It represents a significant evolution from the earlier short takeoff and vertical landing (V/STOL) aircraft of the Harrier family. The AV-8B was developed and put into service to operate from aircraft carriers lacking catapults, amphibious assault ships, and improvised airstrips. Thanks to these capabilities, it has been widely used by the United States Marine Corps, including in operational contexts.
