How To Use 3D Printed Parts

These 3D printed parts are printed with a printable resin material. 3D printed parts, as a whole, have a tendency to be more brittle than traditionally cast resin parts that you might be more familiar with. Extra care should be taken when removing 3D parts from their sprues…. which are called “supports”.

Common Tools for working with 3D Parts

  • Squadron Precision Sprue Cutters –Thesesprue cutterscan be used to remove parts from the sprues. The higher precision, the sharper and finer the blade and the better the cut will be. We would not recommend using the rough cut set on 3D parts. Please keep in mind that 3D parts can be very brittle and if you try to to cut the part off of the supports flush with the part, you risk creating a small hole where the support was. It is safer to cut the part off just a small distance away from the part and then use theSquadron Seam Scraper, Hobby Knife, orSanding Sticksto finish the removal process. As with anything, we would recommend testing new modeling and part preparation tools and techniques on not essential parts to be sure how certain things work.

Plastic Cement Will Not Work With 3D Parts

Plastic Cement and Weld type glues such asTamiya Thin CementorSquadron Plastic Weldare wonderful for plastic injection parts, butWILL NOTwork for 3D printed parts. Instead, a Cyanoacrylate (AKA – CA Glue or Super Glue) or a white glue can be used just like any other resin or photo etch model parts. Check out our suggested glues below:
