While the term “drone” has become widely accepted, it originally referred to a full-size, radio-controlled unmanned aircraft. Its history is long, with practical application beginning as early as World War II, with some even reportedly participating in combat. Drones began as a way to unmanned proven aircraft for sophisticated and specialized missions. This 1/144 scale replica recreates the early days of drones.
Among the many unmanned aircraft development programs pursued by various countries, the U.S. Navy was one of the first to demonstrate its success. The F6F Hellcat, famed as a rival to the Zero fighter, was also a masterpiece for drones. This unmanned Hellcat’s original appearance is recreated using aircraft parts renowned for their meticulous detail. Painting the entire aircraft in warning colors of red and orange, and the tail in light blue and pink, offers a unique and enjoyable experience unlike building a fighter jet.
Enjoy the unique presence of a pioneer challenging new frontiers in the skies, including the memorable first unmanned prototype and the aircraft involved in special observation missions during nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll.
